Historical strategy titles aren’t normally high on gamers’ “to do” lists, and that’s a shame. There are some brilliant games out there, and Koei’s seminal series is probably the most famous of them all. Released on just about every console ever made, its Genesis entries come highly recommended.
Today, many console gamers enjoy the tower defense genre of games. The genre wasn’t so well known back in 1990, when Atari games released Rampart in the arcades. Featuring play for up to three people simultaneously, it was ported to every console known to man, including the Genesis. Handled by Tengen, the 16-bit version is actually pretty darn good.
Guiding mindless little creatures around a level so that they don’t blindly fall to their death seems to have caught on, as evidenced by the success of Lemmings. There have been several other entries in this style of games, and Gametek’s The Humans has players taking the fate of the human race in their hands. Are we worth saving? Koei has always been known for deep strategy games, and the company supported the Genesis in a big way. One of it’s most popular titles is also one of the easiest for newcomers of the genre to get into. Gemfire is a great way to spend some time watching wizards get fried by dragons, and who doesn’t love that?
Strategy games often have a reputation of being brutally hard and inaccessible. This isn’t always true, and most people are probably turned off by the amount of brain work required to play than anything else. Renovation’s Master of Monsters series is one title that fits that moniker nicely. It’s not complicated to get into, but it can be very difficult to complete. Aside from the simplistic graphics though, there’s a lot of solid gameplay to enjoy, and the soundtrack is simply fantastic.
