Sega has made a lot of quality sports games over the years. One genre where its efforts have been largely under-appreciated has been golf. The Genesis is chock loaded with golf games, and some of the best came from Sega itself. Case in point: Pebble Beach Golf Links, a 16-meg, four-player monster that’s as easy to play as it is appealing to look at.
There are a ton of hockey games on the Genesis, and EA seems to have the crown. Be that as it may it doesn’t mean we don’t have to take a look at the other games, and Time Warner Interactive took to the ice with its own entry. Wayne Gretzky and the NHLPA All-Stars had the endorement of the Great One himself, but how good is it?
Electronic Arts’ PGA Golf series reigned supreme on the Genesis, though there were a few quality games that saw released. There were also some stinkers, and with titles like Accolade’s Jack Nicklaus’ Power Golf Challenge, EA’s supremacy was in no danger. When people think of 16-bit fighting games, most tend to consider few titles beyond Street Fighter II and Mortal Kombat. There was surely a ton of mediocre clones out there, and it’s understandable to only remember the best of the bunch. However, Budokan: The Martial Spirit predates all the fighters on the Genesis, as it originally appeared on home computers in 1989. The Genesis port was almost entirely intact, but how does it fare in gameplay?
Arcade-style ice hockey should be fun right? Think NBA Jam with sticks and skates, and it seems like a match made in heaven.
