Sonic is undoubtedly the one character who is synonymous with the Genesis. He was born there, and his four games were responsible for making Sega the powerhouse it was during thr 16-bit era. His final true Genesis outing (no, Sonic 3D Blast doesn’t count!) was Sonic & Knuckles, which boasted some cool lock-on powers that added more gameplay to each of the previous games. Of all of them, perhaps its interaction with Sonic 3 is most memorable, or at least it is to staff writer Vince Thornburg. In the latest installment of Double Take, Vince reminds us just how awesome it was to link up the two cartridges and behold all the hedgehog goodness contained therein. Check it out!

Sonic Jam
Sonic is making waves again, and 2008 might just be the year when Sega finally gets the old formula right. It’s been almost ten years since the famous hedgehog made the jump to the third dimension permanently, and it’s been a shaky road to this day. It wasn’t his first foray into 3D though, as two years before Sonic Adventure was released gamers were treated to a taste of what was to come with the Sonic World mode of Sonic Jam for the Sega Saturn. A compilation of all his 16-bit outings (sans Sonic 3D Blast), the game also boasted a fully 3D world that could be explored. It was mostly just a cool way to travel between different game options, but it set the precedent for Sonic’s evolution.
Interview: Peter Morawiec (STI Programmer)
In our tireless efforts to document every aspect of the Genesis experience, Sega-16 has spoken to literally dozens of personalities from the era, including half a dozen former members of the Sega Technical Institute. Recently, we spoke with Peter Morawiec, designer of Comix Zone and Sonic Spinball. Mr. Morawiec had a lot of great stories to share about his work at the STI and his time at Sega, and he’s graciously provided us with never-before-seen concept art and demo videos of the aforementioned games, as well as a Sonic game that to have been based on the Sonic SATM cartoon. This video hasn’t been seen in years, and probably by no one outside of the STI itself! What are you waiting for?

At the height of the 16-bit era, an elite group of creators enjoyed creative freedom at Sega that many developers today would kill for. The Sega Technical Institute was the home of some of the brightest minds in the industry, including Mark Cerny, Peter Morawiec, and Roger Hector. Among them was a young artist who would go on to work on one of the most controversial titles in Sega’s history, Sonic Xtreme. Chris Senn saw his fair share of interesting things while he worked at the House that Sonic Built, and he recently chatted with Sega-16 about his experiences.
Hands-On: Sonic & the Secret Rings (Nintendo Wii)
Sega-16 follows each of the stars who made their debut on the Genesis, no matter where time and new technology may take them. No star in Sega’s line up is brighter than Sonic The Hedgehog, and the wiley little mammal has had more than his fair share of disappointments since making the transition to 3D. The good news is that Sonic & the Secret Rings on the Nintendo Wii may change all that.
