Paltformers were a major staple of the Genesis gamer’s diet during its run, and as often happens when something gets really popular, you can indeed have too much of a good thing. Case in point: Magical Taruruuto-Kun, a anime-based game that relied on its license and blatant cuteness more than its gameplay, and the result was a bland affair that was only magical at putting people to sleep.
The term “arcade classic” isn’t the first thing to come to mind when the game in question features a penguin pushing ice blocks at his foes, but it quickly makes sense when you consider what types of machines populated ’80s arcades. Sega’s Pengo was a fun (and hard) maze chase game that racked up its fair share of quarters before changing gaming tastes sent it off to franchise storage, but the plucky penguin did return for a Game Gear port in 1992. However, it wasn’t until Sega remade the game completely for the Mega Drive three years later that its true brilliance finally emerged. Unfortunately, Pepen Ga Pengo was left behind in Japan, and it now commands a hefty price on eBay.

The Genesis has a generous helping of games in the genre, and one of them is Sports Talk Baseball, Sega’s only attempt to expand its play-by-play line of sports games beyond the initial football offering. Featuring real players and some solid gameplay, it’s a great way to jump into the sport if you’re just looking for some arcade-style fun.
Like puzzle games? How about obscure titles never released outside of Japan? Until it made an appearance on the Sega Classics Collection, Puzzle & Action: Tant-R never ventured from the shores of its native land. Thankfully, it’s not a real problem if you don’t know the language, and it’s odd that Sega left this quirky little puzzler across the pond. Simple, fun, and full of charm, Tant-R is a game you might want to check out.
