Even after two decades, the myth persists that the Genesis had few RPGs. The argument of the uninformed, it still makes its way into console war conversations the world over. In reality, there are over 70 RPGs between the Genesis and the Sega CD, almost as many as there are shooters (which people say the console has too many of. Go figure.) We dispelled this myth in our RPG Roundup and our Left in Japan: RPGs feature. One of those neat little RPGs that gets overlooked by most is Electronic Arts’ TechnoClash. A cyber punk sort of adventure/RPG title, it was developed by BlueSky Software and features sprite art by Earthworm Jim’s Doug TenNapel.

Uncharted Waters 2: New Horizons
It must be really cool to be a pirate. Sailing wherever you want, plundering and looting at a whim, and all the wenches and rum you can handle! For some reason, video games have never gotten that last part right, but they make up for with an engaging storyline and customizable ships! New Horizons: Uncharted Waters 2 is the sequel to the popular pirate RPG that lets players continue the adventure of expanding their wealth and fame as one of the buccaneers of the Caribbean. What it lacks in wenches, it makes up for in great combat and fun!
Sorcerian
Playing an import RPG can be pretty darn hard, especially when the initial menu screen is the most text-heavy in the game! Such is the case of Falcom’s Sorcerian, which shows little mercy from the get-go. Its character creation menu and options are all in Japanese, and it’s virtually impossible to even create a character if you’re not fluent, let alone actually play the game. Many gamers never got past this, and they missed out on a decent little action/RPG. Thankfully, a partially translated ROM is out there, and it is the only way to get anywhere with the Mega Drive version.
King’s Bounty
Electronic Arts and New World Computing released ports of some complex and often brutally difficult PC games for the Genesis, and among their offerings was King’s Bounty. Though visually simple, give it some time and you’ll find that what it lacks in presentation it more than makes up for in depth and exploration. Some consider it to be among the best examples of the genre on the Genesis, despite the difficulty and massive password (something thankfully remedied by save states). Is it deserving of such praise?
Genre Spotlight: RPG Round-Up
The response to our Genre Spotlight articles has been tremendous. I’m glad that everyone appreciates the effort and love that goes into each of them, and I hope to eventually have one for each genre (including platformers!). In the meantime, why not sate your fix with our latest installment, the RPG Round Up? You know you want to.
