Some consider it to be the best representative of the genre on the console, but there are many dissenting opinions, and fans often point to Konami’s stellar International Superstar Soccer Deluxe as a contender. Everyone likes Tiny Toons. The fact that it’s still appearing on consoles a decade after the series first aired is testament to its staying power. At the height of its popularity, there were games for all the major consoles of the era, and the Genesis received both a standard platformer (quite good in its own right) and a wacky take on the sports genre called ACME All-Stars. In the latter, players took control of their favorite toons and played such games as basketball, soccer, and bowling. It’s actually a lot more fun than it sounds.
The ’90s saw some great cartoons, and among the best was Animaniacs, which made adults laugh just as hard as kids, with its pop culture references and subtle humor. Its huge sucess led to a ton of marketing, including video games. The Genesis platformer was a refreshing take on the genre and featured some great on-the-fly character swapping which was essential to passing each stage.
More than a decade after they first appeared on consoles, the Tiny Toons are still showing up in video games. Back when they were still actually something new, they had two outings on the Genesis, including an excellent little platform adventure called Buster’s Hidden Treasure. Retaining the charm of the cartoon and spreading it evenly over a massive world, the game was a surprise hit.
How many of us grew up playing the Ninja Turtles arcade and NES games? Seriously, these wonderful games were a major part of many gamer’s diet back in the early ’90s, and it was always exciting to see home versions released. Imagine the excitement then, when Konami announced a classic Turtles beat-’em-up for the Genesis! Thing was, it was a little too classic, and it depended a bit too much on previous outings. Still, it was the Turtles on the Genesis, and gamers enjoyed the chance to beat down Shredder and the Foot Clan on their console. Was it worth the wait though?
