Ah the ’90s. A time when there were actually several football franchises from which to chose. Some were great and some outright stunk, but hey, that’s what made having more than a single selection so cool. Acclaim tried for years to compete with the big guns, and while its Quarterback Club series often showed signs of brilliance, most of the time it was just average.

Let’s get this out of the way first: Yes, this is yet another Sega CD “TruVideo” title, which means lots of full motion video and very little gameplay. That’s definitely the case here. NFL’s Greatest is a football game where you don’t control any of the players. Everyone knows that the real draw of sports games is being able to play as your favorite sports star and lead a team to virtual victory. It’s titles like these that tell why the Sega CD failed.

Is Tecmo Super Bowl II: Special Edition worth hunting down this rare Genesis sports title? Probably not. While it’s a solid football game that won’t disappoint, it offers very little that the easier-to-find successor doesn’t.
