Released a year after the PC original, John Madden Football started a franchise that reigns to this day. Though it may not be the best football game on the console, it is arguably the most important, as it not only spurred the Madden juggernaut but also tons of great competition from companies such as Sega and later Visual Concepts.
Electronic Arts rose to sports prominence on the back of a hall of fame coach, and the ’92 edition of John Madden Football added some much-needed features. Electronic Arts and High Score Productions made a great college football game with Bill Walsh College Football. They followed it up with perhaps the best college game of the 16-bit era with the ’95 edition. Improvements in several areas and the inclusion of actual teams rounded out the already solid gameplay and presentation.
EA Sports made things especially interesting by offering a championship version of Madden ’93, which featured some of the best teams from past NFL seasons.
