Almost a decade before Sonic sped his way onto the Genesis, Sega had another blue mascot. Flicky hopped into the arcades in 1984 in a simple-yet-entertaining maze game. Eventually, the little blue bird would end up in Sonic’s world too.

This interview about the design of Flicky was originally published in May 2002 as part of Sega of Japan’s Masterpiece Album series, which featured comprehensive talks with some of Sega’s brightest Japanese arcade and console designers. It was translated as research material for the Flicky section of the book The Sega Arcade Revolution: A History in 62 Games.

He appears in Sonic The Hedgehog, but the little bird known as Flicky predates the Blue Blur by a number of years, having made his debut in arcades in the mid ’80s.It took Sega a while, but it finally got around to porting the game to a console, and while the Genesis version is nearly arcade perfect, there isn’t a whole lot to see.
