Hands-On: Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection (Xbox 360)

Sega recently gave us another helping of Genesis love with the release of Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection for the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360. We spent some time with the latter version, and after putting it through its paces (and getting all the achievements!), we’ve come away… less than impressed. This isn’t a bad collection by any means, but it’s also not a new one. Let’s just put it this way: those of you who still own a copy of the 2006 Sega Genesis Collection for the Playstation 2 might want to think twice about trading it in.

Hands-On: Thunder Force VI (PlayStation 2)

Few shooter franchises bear the prestige of Technosoft’s Thunder Force series, and the name is almost synonymous with the Sega Genesis. Indeed, the three games on that platform are widely held in high regard, and parts three and four are often referred to as classics. The series made the jump to 32-bit hardware with a fifth installment and then lay dormant for over a decade, until it was suddenly jerked back onto consoles with the recent – and import-only – Thunder Force VI for the Playstation 2. We’ve waited ages for this game, but with a new team behind the design and those fabled 16-bit days drifting farther and farther away, is this the reboot the property needs? Interview: Matt Harmon (Designer & Programmer)

It seems odd that a company would develop a title almost to completion, only to shelve it at the eleventh hour. Yet such behavior is common in the game industry for a multitude of reasons, and many games are never released though being virtually completed. It Came from the Desert is an example of corporate decisions leaving development out in the cold. Sega-16 contributor Brandon Cobb recently spoke to Matt Harmon, the man behind the game, about its creation and subsequent termination.
