Sometimes, it’s good to take a break from all the great shmups, platformers, and run-‘n-guns on the Genesis. Occasionally a nice, laid back type of game hits the spots. Those who remember computer lab in junior high already know which game I’m talking about, and everyone else would do themselves a favor and check out Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego, which spawned a lengthy series of edutainment games, as well as a cartoon series.
When most people think of RPGs, they don’t think of the Genesis. That’s unfortunate, as the console boasts a great library of quality titles (almost as many as it has shmups!). When you’re done with the Phantasy Stars and Shining titles, there’s another game awaiting your attention. Nowhere near as pretty or manageable as those games but boasting a quest almost three times the size, Might & Magic: Gates to Another World is the one Genesis RPG that will make you humble. Trust us, any game with a 169-page instruction manual is one that doesn’t pull its punches.
Just hanging out at the beach can be a death-defying challenge when video games are involved. Seriously, don’t these guys ever get a day off? Apparently not. Nothing could seemingly be better than spending a day of surf and sunshine with six hot babes, unless it includes alien abductions, time travel, and toxic waste. Normy’s Beach Babe-O-Rama tells the tale of one man’s quest to save the most important thing imaginable: scantily-clad women. Oh yeah, and the environment too… I guess.
Electronic Arts’ Mutant League series has a huge following, and all are still hoping for another sequel. The only two games ever released were both on the Genesis, and we’ve a review of Mutant League Hockey, which many contend (including series creator Michael Mendheim) to be the weaker of the two. Still, it’s an interesting take on the game, and you have to admit that video game hockey has never been so much fun!
NHL fans might not know it, but there’s another ice hockey league out there that has just as big a fan base. The Swedish Ice Hockey Association has a long and storied history of delivering the best of the sport to European fans, and this did not go unnoticed by game publishers. Electronic Arts, for one, published a modified version of its NHL ’96 with Swedish teams and players. How did it compare to the U.S. version?
