Wolfteam released so many games for the Genesis that it’s a miracle it found time to do anything else. Game after game made its way to our little console, and while some are better than others, most are worth checking out in some way or another. Take Final Zone, for example. With its complex gameplay and isometric view, it probably turned off a lot of gamers, but look deeper and there’s a decent game to be found.
A lot of classic game franchises have been making comebacks lately. Bionic Commando, Rocket Knight, and Splatterhouse are just a few of the brands that are being retooled for modern audiences. After Namco is finished giving Rick and his 2”x4” the upgrade treatment, I would love to see Rolling Thunder be next. Sadly, that hasn’t been announced yet (rubs rabbit’s foot and prays for an E3 miracle), so we’ll have to be satisfied with the excellent trilogy of games that is already out there. The third installment, a Genesis exclusive, was the last time we saw the Agency and Geldra go at it, and it’s actually a darn solid game.
Robert De Niro as Frankenstein’s monster… just sit and think about that for a minute. De Niro is an incredible actor, but there’s something about him portraying Mary Shelly’s piecemeal gollom that just doesn’t click. I guess more than a few people felt the same way about Kenneth Branagh’s trainwreck adaptation of the classic Gothic novel, but of course, Sony Imagesoft had to check this one off on its list of licensed horrors. I think the game might actually be worse than the film, and in this case, that’s saying something.
The Genesis enjoyed an ample supply of Amiga ports, and among them was the notoriously hard Shadow of the Beast – the beast being the game’s difficulty, and the shadow representing where most gamers who played it ended up residing. The sequel was a bit more user-friendly, but the challenge was still rock solid. Take a deep breath and read our full review. Oh, and bring lots of tissue when you play this one; it WILL make you cry.
Lots of Genesis publishers have disappeared, but some barely even showed up at all. Nuvision Entertainment was one company that vanished after a single release, and given the quality of the game in question, we have no doubt why it went under. Bimini Run is a repetitive, droning exercise in boredom that is thankfully over all too soon.
