One of the final Saturn releases was also one of its most original. Taking the action genre in a a new direction, Sonic Team had players take the role of a futuristic rescue team in a game that pushed Sega’s 32-bit hardware to its limit. Burning Rangers is both a technological achievement and a lot of fun.
The classic game of chess comes to the Genesis, and it has never been better. It’s ironic that an unofficial release, available as a download for flash carts or as a reproduction cart, is perhaps the best version of the game on the console. No gimmicks, no licenses – just classic chess simulation for the serious enthusiast. If you’re a chess fan, you’ll want to play this one.
Tempo for the 32X was a wacky platformer that had dancing bugs, yodeling, and even flying cows. Though American gamers also saw a watered-down version released on the Game Gear, they never got a chance to check out the Saturn sequel, Super Tempo. It was only released in Japan, and it currently commands very high prices on sites such as eBay (an expensive Saturn import? NO WAY!). While we can’t go out and buy everone a copy, we can at least show you what you may have missed. We’ve put the game through its paces and can at least offer another glimpse into the world of Tempo and his friends.
Frogger has been making the rounds for almost two decades, and the little amphibian star has appeared on every console known to man. Majesco inexplicably decided on the classic title as the final official domestic release for the American Genesis, and we have a full review of that port, which no doubt taxes the Genesis hardware more than any game before it! While Duke Nukem fans calmly wait until Judgement Day (also known as the day Duke Nukem Forever is actually released), they often look back on the character’s long and storied history. When running down the laundry list of consoles and computers that saw a version of his third and most famous adventure, few people would expect to see the Genesis on that list. Yep, the ol’ girl actually saw Duke Nukem 3D released, thanks to Brazil’s Tec Toy. It may not be in the same league as the original, but you have to at least give a nod to the effort.
