Time to put on the shoes and BOOM SHAKA-LAKA your way to victory on the court! Wait, this isn’t NBA Jam? Ah, well NBA Hangtime is so close to the Midway classic that you’d be hard pressed to know the difference. The developers (not the same as Jam’s) tried to make their game stand out a bit from such a long shadow, but the effort was mostly hit-and-miss.
Sega made good use of its Spider-Man license. With releases for every console of the era, the company fired off one last salvo of web fluid with 1996’s Web of Fire for the 32X. Despite the new hardware, ol’ web head’s last hurrah was more of a whimper than a bang. Nowadays, we’re used to massive game compilations that feature tons of games and extras. It wasn’t always so, however, and some early collections were barely collections at all. Take Arcade Classics, for example. Three games – one of which is Pong – doesn’t exactly offer much bang for your buck. This is as bare bones as it gets folks, and yet we’ve taken the time to review it for you. Go play the real versions of Centipede and Missile Command on MAME or in a real cabinet so we’ll feel better about ourselves, will ya?
What better way than to compliment NBA Jam than with a college entry into the series? Proof that it might indeed have been the shoes, College Slam did everything its professional big brother did, and it showed that there was enough BOOM SHAKA LAKA left in the franchise to go around. Time Killers! You loved it in arcades! You clamored for a home port, and here it is! If anything, it’s a perfect example of being careful of what you wish for. What? You mean you didn’t want this turd on the Genesis? Ah well, in that case you have our condolences.
