The U.S. Saturn suffered early on due to a lack of RPGs, and one of the first released was Virtual Hydlide. The game was a noble attempt at bringing a 3D environment to the genre, but it sacrificed everything the Hydlide series had built up over the years. The result was an adventure better left to rot in a dungeon.
Warp’s horror title D likely did more to establish the reputation of its creator, Kenji Eno, than it did to advance its genre, but the game is a solid bit of fun. It was challenging and created a great atmosphere, despite some visual shortcomings and linear gameplay. It’s a great example of Eno’s visionary storytelling methods and is definitely worth checking out.
Roooolling Staaaaaaaaart! The Saturn’s debut racer suffered from a short draw-in distance and some rough graphics, but it played wonderfully and kept those who bought the console at launch glued to their seats for weeks. Even today, if you can get past the visuals, the game is great fun to play. Let’s go away and fly sky high with Daytona!
Sega selected Cowboys star Deion Sanders as the heir to Joe Montana’s licensing crown, but that was likely the biggest change made to the series. Prime Time NFL didn’t do much to stand apart from previous editions, but it added enough to make it a contender worthy of the franchise tag.
Sega wowed Saturn owners with a stellar rendition of its arcade monster, Sega Rally. Boasting impressive visuals, excellent gameplay, and an incredible soundtrack, it was enough to keep owners glued to their consoles for hours at a time. Coupled with the Arcade Racer wheel, Sega Rally is the perfect Saturn racing game.
