Disney’s The Jungle Book

Virgin Interactive, together with Disney Software, produced some of the most solid platformers on the Genesis, racking up such hits as Aladdin, and The Lion King. One title that flew under the radar of many gamers was The Jungle Book. Some may say that it takes more than a few pages from Aladdin, but they’d have things backwards. Programming guru David Perry stopped work on Jungle Book to tackle the famous game, and he brought a lot of its gameplay elements with him. Unfortunately, it was released afterward and eventually got lost among a wave of quality games that arrived in 1994. Anyone who’s a fan of either of the aformentioned Disney hits should give it a try.

Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers (CD)

One of the more controversial FMV titles, Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers attempted to go in a new direction with the standard gameplay of the genre, and it went from pre-production to release in less than ninety days, due to Van being presented with an almost impossible deadline. Some love it, and others hate it, but it’s definitely a game you need to play at least once.

Pete Sampras Tennis

Sega’s done a great job of getting its tennis franchise back to form with Virtua Tennis 3, and it brings a great deal of fun and realism to the sport. Not that tennis has ever really lacked in the fun department. From the excellent Super Tennis on the SNES to the great Pete Sampras Tennis series on the Genesis, there has always been a good game within reach.

Virtua Racing

When it was first released in 1994, Virtua Racing wowed gamers with its incredible use of polygons and its $100 price tag. The exorbitant cost (the highest for the time) was due to it being the one and only game to ever make use of the powerful Sega Virtual Processor, or SVP chip. Until the 32X got a port a year later, this was the only way to play the arcade hit at home, and it was darn close to having a real Model 1 arcade board. It may be outdated now, but Virtua Racing’s place in Genesis history is assured.

Mr. Nutz

Oh my dear Sonic, what have you started? It seems that your breakout success sparked a deluge of would-be mascots that felt they had the same spark you did, but when the dust finally settled, those that weren’t buried under the piles of unsold cartridges wallowed in misery at the unemployment office. Some were thankfully lost to time, and others like Mr. Nutz got another fifteen minutes of fame with a attempted comeback in the modern era, which is about fourteen more then he deserved.
