Shadow of the Beast II

The Genesis enjoyed an ample supply of Amiga ports, and among them was the notoriously hard Shadow of the Beast – the beast being the game’s difficulty, and the shadow representing where most gamers who played it ended up residing. The sequel was a bit more user-friendly, but the challenge was still rock solid. Take a deep breath and read our full review. Oh, and bring lots of tissue when you play this one; it WILL make you cry.

Disney’s Ariel the Little Mermaid

One would think that a Disney game developed by BlueSky Software (VectorMan, World Series Baseball) and released by Sega would be a recipe for a blockbuster. Unfortunately, such was not the case. Ariel the Little Mermaid was a shallow, repetitive game that left many wondering how such a good license could have been squandered. With mermaids, sharks, and witches, this should have been good. Instead, it stinks like yesterday’s fish.

Atomic Runner

Data East may no longer be around as an actual company (though you can still play some of their arcade classics on the Wii via the Data East Arcade Collection on the Wii this month), the games will live forever, especially its competent arcade ports on the Genesis. Atomic Runner was one coin-op favorite to make the jump, and it’s a fun little run-‘n-gun with some lush visuals and large bosses.

Hit the Ice

Arcade-style ice hockey should be fun right? Think NBA Jam with sticks and skates, and it seems like a match made in heaven. Taito’s Hit the Ice strove for such a peanut butter and chocolate mix, but it ends up spending time in the penalty box instead. Read our full review for all the body-checking details.

Gemfire

Koei has always been known for deep strategy games, and the company supported the Genesis in a big way. One of it’s most popular titles is also one of the easiest for newcomers of the genre to get into. Gemfire is a great way to spend some time watching wizards get fried by dragons, and who doesn’t love that?
