Soccer is the world’s most popular sports, but that doesn’t exempt it from crappy games! There have been more than a fair share of duds from publishers over the year, and Super Kick Off sits comfortably on that list. Hey, it’s made by Tiertex! Need I say more?
Namco has done a competent job of capturing the charm and story of the famous anime, but the gameplay is hurt by the focus on story. It’s hard to have a great RPG without all the elements that make the genre what it is. Still, Nadia makes for a relaxing adventure without all the trappings of your typical RPG. If you’re looking for a different spin on a gaming standard, this one might be worth looking into.
Wolf Team worked on a trio of games that told the story two adventurers out to save the world. Opinions on Anet’s two outings are varied, but people are pretty much in the same boat when it comes to the first game, Earnest Evans. A great idea and some nifty presentation are undone by ridiculous sprite animation and wonky control. This was supposed to rival Indiana Jones but fell short on so many levels.
Sega’s second attempt at a basketball game was only slightly better than the first, but at least there were signs of improvement. There must have been a slight hiccup with the basketball license though, as Laker coach Pat Riley was swapped out (traded?) for San Antonio legend David “the Admiral” Robinson.
If you’re looking for another RPG to play, there are probably a bunch of Electronic Arts PC ports that you haven’t tried yet. Many gamers shied away from what appeared to be daunting quests, and the like of Might & Magic II: Gates to Another World, King’s Bounty, and Rings of Power were passed over by far too many would-be adventurers. That last title boasts one of the largest adventure worlds on the console, and if it weren’t for the incredibly slow-paced gameplay, more people would have enjoyed what is otherwise a great Tolkien-like adventure.
