Powerball

Namco’s early 16-bit efforts are a lot of fun, and Genesis owners everywhere should check them out. Among the batch is an underrated sports title that mixes American football with soccer (and a bit of wrestling). With its simple gameplay and frantic pace, fans of brutal sports games might want to give Powerball a spin.

Heavy Nova (CD)

Before Genesis gamers had the chance to be disappointed by the plodding and frustrating gameplay of Heavy Nova, Micronet unleashed the game to Japanese Mega CD owners. As one would imagine, it was the same bad game embellished with a CD soundtrack, giving importers very little reason to trade up from their cartridge version. Heavy Nova is bad, no matter on what format it appears.

Hardball!

Among the slew of baseball games on the Genesis, Accolade’s Hardball! strikes out. Poor gameplay overpowers all other considerations, making this one title to forget about. Later installments fixed many of the problems, but by then there were much better alternatives. The best thing about Hardball!? The Boris Vallejo box art.

Onslaught

What could have been an excellent port of a good action/adventure title turned out to be the best example for Sega to lock out unlicensed games. Onslaught was the only Accolade game that didn’t work with a TMSS-equipped Genesis, and it’s for good reason. Let’s just say that the console seems to know better with this one…

Warrior of Rome

Strategy games, while popular on PCs, went under a lot of gamer’s radars during the 16-bit era. With releases like Warrior of Rome, it’s easy to see why. Vague objectives and a dragging pace are just some of the problems plaguing this early title, and if war were actually like this, Caesar would never have left Italy.
