Sonic The Hedgehog’s first adventure on the Master System was quite different than the on the Genesis. Developed by Yuzo Koshiro’s studio Ancient (and featuring some great music), it’s an excellent rendition that doesn’t try to be more than its hardware will allow, and it’s pretty much a new game. If you’ve already played Sonic to death but still haven’t tried it on the Master System, you’re missing out.
Sega fans had the Shinobi series, and there were always comparisons between it and Ninja Gaiden on the NES. While both are great, Sega fans actually got the better end of the deal. Ninja Gaiden made appearances on the PAL Master System and on the Game Gear. The MS version is as good as you’d expect and well worth tracking down.
You’d think that after so many months doing these articles, we’d have played through everything by now. The truth is, there are so many great games on Sega’s hardware that we could probably go another decade and never cover all of them. Still, we aim to try! That pesky Carmen Sandiego is on the move again, only this time it’s through time! Get out your biggest encyclopedia and prepare to travel throughout history to track down gaming’s most infamous outlaw. Definitely a game for those who prefer their titles to be a bit more cerebral, the Genesis version is delightful and educational!
Parker Brothers was one of the rare publishers on the Master System, but it was good enough to port one of the best old school platformers ever. Montezuma’s Revenge has become a bit pricey, but there’s so much great gameplay here that it’s absolutely worth the price of admission.
