Sega innovated in several ways with 1982’s Zaxxon and created a solid and challenging shooter that has become a classic. However, some may not enjoy the lack of depth find the gameplay frustrating if they’re not using a control stick. If those are humps you can get over, then Zaxxon offers an enjoyable, albeit short, experience that exemplifies Sega at its creative best.
Capcom’s seminal brawler has finally made its way to the Genesis, and it has a ton of new features! Homebrew developer MXRetroDev has spent months fine-tuning the port, and the result is a Christmas present Genesis fans will definitely want to have on their flash carts.
Fans of difficult side-scrollers like Ghouls ‘n Ghosts are going to have a blast with DaemonClaw. It requires strategy and practice to finish, but casual players might find the learning curve a bit too much. Perseverance is key here, as the game isn’t that long, and additional modes add some extra layers to an excellent title by BitBeamCannon.
BitBeamCannon has just launched a crowdfunding campaign for its latest Genesis action title, Metal Mack! The game pays homage to 8-bit classics like Mega Man, and it looks really good so far. The game has already achieved its funding goal, but there are several stretch goal that would be excellent additions to this amazing project.
Ninja Princess is an underrated title on the SG-1000. A port of the 1985 Sega coin-op hit, it does a faithful job of recreating that game on the hardware. If you like action, ninjas, and want a new title for your console, Ninja Princess is a great choice.
Badcomputer is back with another rock-solid Master System release that harkens back to the simple yet addictive Sega Card games of old. Astro Climber is super fun and challenging title that is going to keep you in your seat and glued to the TV. It’s also as affordable as it is engaging, so there’s no excuse to not get it and platform like it’s 1986.
Though it may have been overshadowed by Resident Evil: CODE Veronica a few months after release, Carrier still manages a decent survival horror experience. It doesn’t stray far from its RE-based roots, but it does show signs of the genre finally stepping into the next generation with 3D environments and refining manual aiming and movement.
