Long before there was Mortal Kombat, Razorsoft had the violent game market cornered on the Genesis. Death Duel is among the games it released that somehow made it past censors, and while it’s never horrific in its gore, there certainly is a lot of blood to go around. And it’s fun to boot!
The battle for control of Arrakis rages on the Sega CD! Based on the classic Frank Herbert novel and taking a visual cue from the 1984 film, Dune blends action and strategy to create a solid hybrid that may be too easy for hardened strategy buffs and too bare-bones for Dune fans.
There are plenty of soccer titles on the Genesis, but few match the monsters that are FIFA and Sensible Soccer. Rage Software’s Ultimate Soccer made a dash for the cup, but it was ultimately eliminated due to an unintuitive camera, poor presentation, and mediocre gameplay.
Sega attempted to combat the success of Nintendo’s Tetris with Columns, which is a solid game in its own right. Released on the Genesis in 1990, it also received a Master System port, and that version is actually one of the better puzzle games on the console.
Namco’s 1989 arcade racer Four Trax came to the Genesis as Quad Challenge, and while it’s not a bad racer to spend some time with, it pales next to other games available at the time. Plain visuals and a dearth of gameplay options leave little meat on the bones of what was most likely the first ATV game on consoles.
