Street Smart

I have to admit, I love me a good brawler every now and then. Being the total scrub that I am, I play just for kicks rather than for prestige or rank. That’s what has me checking out more and more of the older fighters out there. Recently forum member Scooter was kind enough to send me a copy of Treco’s Street Smart for the Genesis, and I quickly popped it in, control in hand. A fan of the SNK original, I was amazed at just how poorly this port turned out. Everything that was good has been changed for the worse, and the one thing that was pretty decent – the gameplay – is left to carry the whole game. Suffice it to say that things didn’t work out.

WWF Rage in the Cage

One of the most dramatic of all wrestling matches is the cage match. Two men locked inside a massive cell of steel, with victory coming to the one who can climb his way out. WFF Rage in the Cage for the Sega CD centered its theme around this classic type of match, with completely mediocre results, despite having at its disposal all the advantages the new hardware offered. It was just another example of Genesis games being ported to CD with little extra effort.

Sports Talk Baseball

It’s almost spring, and that means it’s almost baseball season! The Genesis has a generous helping of games in the genre, and one of them is Sports Talk Baseball, Sega’s only attempt to expand its play-by-play line of sports games beyond the initial football offering. Featuring real players and some solid gameplay, it’s a great way to jump into the sport if you’re just looking for some arcade-style fun.

Puzzle and Action: Tant-R

Like puzzle games? How about obscure titles never released outside of Japan? Until it made an appearance on the Sega Classics Collection, Puzzle & Action: Tant-R never ventured from the shores of its native land. Thankfully, it’s not a real problem if you don’t know the language, and it’s odd that Sega left this quirky little puzzler across the pond. Simple, fun, and full of charm, Tant-R is a game you might want to check out.

College Slam

What better way than to compliment NBA Jam than with a college entry into the series? Proof that it might indeed have been the shoes, College Slam did everything its professional big brother did, and it showed that there was enough BOOM SHAKA LAKA left in the franchise to go around. We have a full review of it, so you better just go and read it before I whip out another NBA Jam reference……FROM DOWNTOWN!!
