Every so often, a really odd game shows up on a console. Not weird as in “it looks/plays weird,” mind you. No, I’m referring to that special game that uses some strange peripheral or requires some unique set up to work. Take Realtec’s Whac-A-Critter, for example. It used a special nine-button controller that’s rarer in the wild than a Tazmanian Tiger, and all to just smack animals on a screen. After paying the equivalent of a organ transplant for a complete copy, I’m sure many buyers eventually got their money’s worth by using the controller against their own heads.

Super Monaco GP
Before a certain hedgehog took the world by storm, Sega was still relying on its arcade ports. Gamers weren’t taken by the advertising as well as the company would have liked, but the quality of the games was there. Like e Golden Axe, Sega produced a home version of Super Monaco GP that improved on the original with added modes and features. The World Championship mode is enough to keep players occupied for weeks, and there’s some solid arcade racing in there to boot!
ESPN Sunday Night NFL
With all the football games available on the Genesis, you’d expect some of them to be bad. What you wouldn’t expect is for any of them to be this bad. ESPN Sunday Night NFL is a train wreck of a game that does nothing to keep players interested, and about the only real football sensation anyone will get from playing it is that of a quarterback when they toss this turd across the room.
Exo-Squad
The early ’90s wasn’t a safe place for Saturday morning cartoons. The three major networks were beginning to lose interest in keeping the tradition alive, and many great shows unfortunatley saw an early end. Exo-Squad was one show that disappeared seemingly overnight, and all we were left with were some awesome toys, great memories… and a Genesis game!
Wardner
The 16-bit era distinguishes itself for having produced some amazing platformers, and a lot of those were really, really hard. Some weren’t as amazing, but they sure did get the “hard” part right. Mentrix’s Warnder was one such title, and while it was quite faithful to the arcade original, most players remember it for being brutally difficult.
