Sega made good use of its Spider-Man license. With releases for every console of the era, the company fired off one last salvo of web fluid with 1996’s Web of Fire for the 32X. Despite the new hardware, ol’ web head’s last hurrah was more of a whimper than a bang. Despite its maligned reputation, the 32X has a suprisingly decent sports library. World Series Baseball, FIFA Soccer ’96, NBA Jam Tournament Edition, and an adequate version of Quarterback Club cover most of the bases, and the group is rounded out by a solid golf title. Bearing perhaps the longest name in all of Sega gaming, Golf Magazine: 36 Great Holes of Golf Starring Fred Couples is a great way for the golf novice to jump into the sport. The early ’90s saw a ton of full-motion video games, and the genre exploded for a few years, until people actually came to their senses and remembered that they actually like to play their video games. Leading the FMV charge was Digital Pictures, and the company managed to release a lot of its games on different consoles, including the 32X. The result was the same game… but with much cleaner video! Supreme Warrior, a kung-fu fighter, was one title to get the 32X face lift, and we have a roundhouse review for it ready to go. Just remember: never take your eyes off your opponent, even when you bow.
Virtua Fighter remains a three dimensional fighter, and therein lies one of its greatest strengths. It revolutionized the fighting game scene when it hit the arcades, and all those great features are present in the 32X version.
One of the few fighters created just for the 32X was an obscure game called Cosmic Carnage. It was released only on the 32X, so it is virtually unknown due to that add-on’s failure (it wasn’t the only game to suffer such a fate). A beat-em-up with little innovation or any special qualities to make it stand out in the crowd Cosmic Carnage wasn’t anything special and if you haven’t played it, then don’t worry because you haven’t really missed out on anything.
