In 2013, Sonic returned for another adventure that many hoped would help erase his prior 3D history. Sonic Lost World on the Wii U is a step in the right direction, though it takes a little time to appreciate. It’s not perfect by any means, but there’s enough meat on the bone to make this one 3D Sonic game worth checking out.
Hands-On
Hands-On: Data Disc Vinyl Soundtracks
Sega collectibles can be few and far between, but Data Discs has released what has to be among the best out there. The British company offers a series of vinyl soundtracks that are draped in stunning packaging that pays true homage to each game’s history. They’re sure to quicken the pulse of both Segaphiles and audiophiles alike.
Hands-On: Sonic The Hedgehog Pocket Adventure
Sega’s famous hedgehog has appeared on many consoles, including the short-lived (but awesome) Neo Geo Pocket Color. Essentially a celebration of all the stages that made the Genesis Sonic games so much fun, it works quite well on the little machine and is a worthy addition to any game library.
Hands-On: Rolling Thunder (NES)
Namco’s arcade classic came home to the NES in stellar fashion, retaining the visual style and gameplay. It also brought all the challenge of the coin-op, and all these factors combine to produce one of the better arcade ports on the NES. This is definitely a cartridge to own.
Hands-On: After Burner Climax (iOS)
Sega’s screaming fighter shmup is back, and this time it’s on your iPhone! Everyone loves After Burner, and Sega’s made the classic franchise portable again. Going from the arcade to consoles and then to the mobile market seems like quite a trek for even a fighter jet to make, and this one sadly loses some of its speed along the way. Some games simply weren’t made for a phone.
